East Bay ImPACT Center:
COVID-19 Update:
Because of the global pandemic, we have suspended baseline ImPACT testing at our facility. However we now have the ability to have indiduals complete baseline testing for ages 11 years through adulthood in your own home. The process of completing testing in the home enviroment has been validated by ImPACT to be accurate and reliable. When ready, click on the link below to purchase a baseline test for your athlete(s). Once this process is completed, you will be emailed a link for one baseline test along with complete instructions. The link is active for 90 days. For athletes ages 5 to 10, baseline testing at home is not yet available. Call the office to inquire/schedule an in office ImPACT test for this younger age group.
About Concussions:
Over the past few years, the medical community has become increasingly aware of the effect of head trauma on the adolescent brain. Teenagers and young adults often don't exhibit symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) resulting from a level of impact that would cause more obvious findings in an adult. Consequently, an adolescent athlete with post-concussive syndrome most likely has suffered a more substantial injury than an adult with a similar level of symptoms. After suffering an initial mTBI, the young athlete is at a five-fold risk of sustaining another. If repeated trauma, however mild, occurs after the initial injury has had a chance to fully resolve "second impact syndrome" may result--with tragic consequences. The International Conference on Concussion in Sport has developed a Consensus Statement expounding the recommended protocol for management of mTBI in the competitive athlete. Pre-season baseline evaluation as well as close post-injury follow up are the mainstay of proper management.
What is ImPACT?
ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computer based neurocognitive tool that was established by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. This testing evaluates an individual's visual and verbal memory, problem solving ability, and reaction times to establish baseline scores in athletes that are stored for reference later. The evaluation is then re-administered to athletes following head injuries or suspected concussions to follow the recovery process. This valuable data aids the clinician in determining when the athlete is ready to resume training and return to play. The current version of ImPACT is indicated for individuals aged 11 years and up. There is a pediatric version of ImPACT designed for kids down to age 5 that is also available in our office. ImPACT testing has been researched and advocated by The International Conference on Concussion in Sport. The evaluation is widely used by all teams in the NFL and NHL and many other professional sports teams. Dr. Nash has completed rigorous training in concussion management and has been granted the status of Credentialed ImPACT Consultant. He is the only primary care pediatrician in California to achieve this certification.

Purchasing Baseline ImPACT:
For your convenience, athletes ages 11 years and up may now perform baseline ImPACT tests at home. You may purchase a baseline test for $50 by clicking the button below. Once completed, you will be emailed a link with instructions and a test. The link is active for 90 days. For purchasing baseline testing of larger groups, teams, etc., please call the office at: 925.362.1861. |
How is ImPACT Administered?
Baseline testing can now be purchesed and completed at your convenience in the comfort of your home. All that is required is a laptop or desktop computer (not a phone or iPad) and a quiet environment free of distractions. The test takes about 30 minutes to complete. It is recommended that adolescents repeat baseline testing every 2 years as the brain continues to develop. The version of ImPACT designed for 5-10 year-old athletes currently needs to be completed in our office and should be repeated annually.
Is ImPACT Covered by Insurance?
Baseline ImPACT testing is not covered by insurance. The $50 cost of the evaluation is less than the average pair of cleats or athletic shoes. In the event that an athlete sustains a suspected mTBI (concussion) the cost of the office visit and follow-up ImPACT testing usually are covered (check with your individual carrier). The office is an "in network" provider for most commercial PPO plans and is also "in-network" for Muir Medical Group HMO patients with a referral from the patient's primary care physician.

1-to-1 Pediatrics and the Community:
Dr. Nash has been practicing primary care pediatrics in the San Ramon Valley for over 25 years. During that time, he has demonstrated a commitment to protecting the health and safety of his patients and all children in the community. The concussion management program that 1-to-1 Pediatrics offers is intended to quickly evaluate the adolescent student/athlete with a suspected mTBI. Once assessed, the patient is given a customized treatment plan designed to protect the brain from further injury while allowing the concussed athlete to rehabilitate and return to play as quickly and safely as possible.
You wouldn't let your child play sports without the proper protective equipment. ImPACT baseline and follow-up testing is a hidden level of protection for the adolescent athlete's most valuable asset--their brain.
